Zofia Barankiewicz urodziła się w latach II wojny światowej w Hrubieszowie. Jej rodzice, Józef i Olga Bakunowie, przenieśli się tam z rodzinnych stron, z okolic Włodzimierza Wołyńskiego. W lutym 1945 roku Józef przybył do Olsztyna wraz z pierwszym transportem kolejarzy i został skierowany do pracy w Sątopach Samulewo. W 1950 roku starsza siostra pani Zofii sprowadziła rodzinę do Olsztyna. Wkrótce zamieszkali w kamienicy przy ul. Grunwaldzkiej. Jako dziecko pomagała mamie, bileterce olsztyńskich kin, m. in. przenosząc nagrania Polskiej Kroniki Filmowej pomiędzy ówczesnymi kinami „Polonia” i „Odrodzenie”. Wówczas poznała swojego przyszłego męża – Andrzeja Barankiewicza, który pracował jako kinooperator. To właśnie on wprowadził ją w arkana fotografii, a także podarował małoobrazkowy aparat fotograficzny „RETINĘ”. Tak rozpoczęła się niekończąca się przygoda z fotografią.
